The SWISS NATIONAL DAY of 1 Agosto

The SWISS NATIONAL DAY is an anniversary that celebrates the birth of the Swiss Confederation in 1291.
The Swiss National Day was established in 1891 and is celebrated in a sober and federal way, with political speeches, bonfires, fireworks, lanterns and flags.
Every year, a Swiss municipality hosts the official celebrations, which are broadcast on national television. Some locations offer special shows.

In Lugano, the Swiss national day is celebrated with a rich program of events involving the city center and the lakefront.

The day begins at 6 in the morning with the diana played by the Tamburini Luganesi. At 10:15 the authorities and the Lugano Volunteer Corps go to Piazza Indipendenza to pay homage to the obelisk of Independence, a symbol of Lugano history.
At 11:00 there is a concert by the Castagnola Philharmonic in Palazzo Civico.
The most awaited moment is at 10.30 pm, when the fireworks color the sky and the lake of Lugano with a show entitled "Emotions of colours".
For those who want to attend the show from the lake, the Società Navigazione Lago di Lugano organizes grandstand-boats with limited seats and upon reservation. Along the lakefront there are also various gastronomic animations to taste the local specialities.

In Chiasso, the Swiss national holiday is celebrated with a ceremony in Piazza Col. C. Bernasconi, where the authorities, associations and citizens meet at 19:00.
You can hear the sound of the bells, the national anthem and the productions of the Civic Philharmonic of Balerna. Afterwards, the party continues at the Grotto Grütli/Casa Urani, in the Sottopenz area, where you can taste the local specialities.
